Next-Gen Honda City 2028: New Hybrid Platform & Futuristic 0-Series Design Revealed

Next-Gen Honda City 2028: The next-gen Honda City is finally becoming a reality, and new sources have confirmed that the completely new version will enter the Indian market in 2028. This sixth-generation model will utilize Honda’s new premium midsize hybrid platform and is likely to adopt a daring and a futuristic look that is influenced by the Honda 0 Series sedan concept that was presented at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. The next City with a more elegant look, lightweight structure, and improved powertrains is expected to take back its position in the midsize Sedan segment.

Design

The design is getting ever so close to the final version with early mock-ups showing a direct link to Honda’s 0 Series styling philosophy. The next-gen City is envisioned to have a soft, cutting-edge outline, and an even noiseless body, and to possess a more powerful and sharper stance. One of the distinctive features might be a front quarter glass that is somewhat reminiscent of the legendary Lamborghini Countach, thus imparting a sporty flair. But then again, the sedan would not be getting pop-up headlamps. The entire design language is going to be more luxurious and technically advanced, thus sucking the City right into the competition.

Platform

Honda will be transforming the new City to its latest midsize hybrid platform which is specifically designed for small and midsize cars and SUVs. This platform is going to be about 90 kg lighter than the existing hybrid platform which will be a plus for performance, fuel economy, and overall handling of the vehicle. The platform’s part-sharing approach is quite radical, i.e. more than 60% of the components will be shared across the next Honda models. This will help keep the production cost down, and hence, Honda will be able to present the City more aggressively in the market.

Engine

The next-gen Honda City is expected to be powered by two different types of engines. The first one to be offered is the well-known 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol engine which would be improved in terms of emission norms to comply with the stricter CAFE 3 regulations. The other one will be Honda’s advanced version of the 1.5L Atkinson cycle hybrid that incorporates two electric motors and an e-CVT system. This combination will ensure higher efficiency, smoother power delivery and better performance in real-world applications. The hybrid version will probably be one of the main attractions of the 2028 model.

Launch

As per the most recent information, the completely new Honda City is scheduled to be launched in 2028, right after global unveiling of Honda’s first model based on the new hybrid platform in 2027. Due to high localisation and shared components, the City could come with sharper price strategy aimed at making it a direct competitor to the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus.
